Well after a whirlwind last minute prep, goodbyes, drinking, an impromptu party & photo roast (Thanks Lisa & Caroline), plus an Independence Day celebration it was time to start heading west, until I arrived in the east. The 15+ hr flight from LAX to SFO and SFO to Beijing was relatively uneventful. It was a daytime flight so I didn’t really get any sleep, but we did get a few very nice aerial views of western Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia. The western regions of Alaska was littered with lakes and streams which looked like they were filled with quicksilver in the afternoon sunlight.
Finally it was touchdown in Beijing. It was a hot sunny day and the newly renovated international wing of the Beijing airport has been designed to take full advantage of the sun light. 3 stories of glass and white arches gave a quite a clean and modern impression.
