Dalai Lama's residence

Dalai Lama's residence

We’ll I’ve definitely decided that the Dalai Lama is my favorite Lama.  Sure the Panchen Lama is young and hip, shrouded in mystery, hiding out in the custody of the Chinese government. Then there is the Black Hat Lamas with their ohhhh so cool Goth version of Buddhism, but when it comes right down to it I like my lamas old, bald, and funny.

__mg_7093_svblog_0 This week his holiness has been playing hard to get.  My new friend Patrick and I attended his Holiness’s birthday party (July 6) near Dharamsala in Mcleod Ganj, but he declined to appear. We waited to see his motorcade leaving for Delhi and he slipped passed us.  We even kept a close watch of his residence one night from the porch of a nearby bar.  We suspected his Holiness might step out onto the balcony to do something crazy while he though nobody was looking, but alas we saw no late night Lama Dance.    The rumors that I made up in my head about wild chant parties, a fabled Buddha brew, and midnight cosmic bowling at Mr D. Lamas residence appear to be widely exaggerated.

__mg_6991_svblog We are determined though to be in the enlightened presence of his holiness. Recent rumors of him giving talks in the Spiti valley will have us on the move for a 4+ day trek in that direction.  First we will take a quick rafting trip down the Beas river, because we don’t want to appear like desperate stalkers of course.  After rafting we will sneak across a few passes, cleverly disguised in a group of tourists trekking, and then crash the party in Spiti.

Who knows perhaps the Spiti valley is the perfect place to glimpse a real Lama party.  I’m told what happens on the roof of the world stays on the roof of the world.

What beautiful scenery. It is a good thing you are not afraid of heights.
